SERMI certification is coming – understand how it affects you

Is your business ready for SERMI?

A SERMI certificate will soon be required for any business carrying out diagnostics and repairs to a vehicle’s security-related systems. Here’s what you need to know.

What is SERMI?
SERMI stands for Security-related Repair and Maintenance Information.

What is a SERMI certificate?
A SERMI certificate is a unique personal digital certificate that will allow you to access vehicle security systems or associated modules on vehicles via a single online registration, avoiding the need for separate accreditation from each manufacturer.

Who needs a SERMI certificate?
Any business and individual that works on systems that prevent a vehicle from being stolen and driven away, or which assist with tracking and recovery.

This can include:

      • key programming
      • immobiliser coding
      • ignition systems
      • instrument clusters
      • ECU diagnostics and programming

As well as requiring an Independent Operator (IO) certificate for the business, employees who require access to restricted data will also require authorisation.

Why do I need a SERMI certificate for ECU programming?
ECUs – especially engine and body control module ECUs – often control multiple functions. Because some of these may be security-related, you may find it increasingly difficult to perform diagnostics work and ECU programming without a SERMI certificate.

Most diagnostic tools will perform a two-way electronic check of your SERMI digital certificate when requiring access to vehicle manufacturer information for any work involving security-related vehicle systems or associated modules.

If Core Diagnostics has a SERMI certificate, do I still need one?
Yes. Unless you have your own, valid SERMI Independent Operator (IO) certificate, Core Diagnostics (or any other remote diagnostics company) will not be able to provide remote support for any diagnostic tasks that require one.

How do I get a SERMI IO certificate?
You’ll shortly be able to apply for a SERMI IO certificate via the  website for the RMISC, which is the body authorised with delivering SERMI in the UK.

In the meantime, we recommend that you complete the online expression of interest form to ensure that you’re ready for the SERMI roll-out.

What is the application process?
When you’re ready to apply, you’ll need to complete an online form and provide the following documents:

      • Proof of business ownership
      • Public Liability insurance with cover of at least £1m
      • Evidence that your business is legally registered
      • Proof that you (and any nominated employees) work within the automotive area
      • Basic DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) certificate and passport photo for the business owner or person with significant control, and for any nominated employee(s) to be authorised

You’ll also need to pay a registration fee for the SERMI IO certificate, as well as an additional fee for each nominated employee.

How long is a SERMI certificate valid for?
Once your application has been approved your SERMI certificate will be valid for five years.

RMISC will conduct an on-site audit two times or more during that period, including one unannounced inspection.
